The model is in good condition with no damage. The base is wooden, and the sails are fabric.
Purpose: Originally built as a collier under the name Bethia in 1784, the ship was acquired by the Royal Navy for a single botanical mission.
Mission: Under the command of Lieutenant William Bligh, the Bounty sailed to the Pacific Ocean to collect breadfruit seedlings from Tahiti and deliver them to the West Indies as a cheap food source for plantation slaves.
Mutiny: In April 1789, a few weeks after leaving Tahiti, a portion of the crew, led by Mate Fletcher Christian, mutinied. Captain Bligh and 18 loyal sailors were put ashore in an open boat.
Fate of the ship: The mutineers attempted to establish a settlement on Tubuai Island, but ultimately found refuge on the uninhabited and mischarted Pitcairn Island. To avoid detection and prevent desertion, they burned the Bounty on January 23, 1790.
Legacy: Bligh managed a heroic voyage of over 3,500 nautical miles in an open boat to the Dutch port of Kupang. The story of the mutiny has been repeatedly adapted for film and written about in books. Descendants of the mutineers and their Tahitian companions still live on Pitcairn Island.
